It all began in the Ore Mountains on the border between Germany and what is now the Czech Republic, where the population, in protest against the taxes imposed by German troops, devised the idea of creating small soldiers who acted as nutcrackers. In this way, the people believed they were reversing the roles by having the soldiers crack the nuts, who too often harassed the people themselves.
Thus a strong tradition was born, and the toy soldier became a symbol of Christmas, first in Germany and gradually throughout the world. Later, in 1816, it became famous with Tchaikovsky's ballet of the same name, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," based on Hoffman's fairy tale. Today, the nutcracker soldier is considered a lucky charm and is reproduced in various countries, made of various materials and depicting a variety of subjects, from a king to a soldier.
